Environmental Defense Fund is hiring a

Zero-Emission Truck Intern

🇺🇸 Boston, MA, US 📝 FULL-TIME

Overview

Put your passion and skills to work for the planet. Climate change is the most urgent issue of our time, and we need people like you to help us build a vital Earth — for everyone.

We’re Environmental Defense Fund, a fast-paced nonprofit with a growing staff of more than 1,000 people in nearly 30 countries. We deliver game-changing solutions that cut climate pollution and strengthen people’s ability to thrive despite the effects climate change is already having. We work wherever we can have the most impact, from local communities to top companies to governments worldwide, and even in space.

Our culture, values and commitment to diversity make EDF an exciting and meaningful place to work. Every job here makes a difference. Won’t you join us?

Responsibilities

Program/Department Overview

Zero-emission trucks and buses are increasingly available and capable. EDF aims to transition trucks and buses in the U.S. to zero-emission solutions by 2050. The stakes are huge. Though trucks and buses represent fewer than 5% of all vehicles, they account for 28% of climate pollution from road transportation and 57% of the soot from vehicles. The next several years are critical to lock in a pace of transition to achieve our goal. We have opportunities to help leading fleets gain an understanding on how to effectively operate zero-emission trucks and set clear transition plans; put in place national and state-level policies that set long-term standards with a clear timeline for transitioning to zero-emission vehicles; and secure investments to strategically deploy charging infrastructure necessary to support these vehicles and help reduce upfront cost barriers.

Overall Function
Massachusetts is one of seventeen states that has committed to adopting policies and programs that accelerate the transition to zero-emission trucks and buses. The intern will support EDF in shaping the design and ambition of these policies and programs. The intern will support the development of recommendations on how the state can achieve its goals and collaborate with local stakeholders to further sharpen and build support for these recommendations. The intern will report to the Senior Director, Vehicles & Freight.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Undertake an analysis of the current state of zero-emission truck policy in Massachusetts and key stakeholders involved on the issue.
  • Support EDF advocacy on priority zero-emission vehicle legislation, including accelerating the electrification of public fleets and regional transit fleets.
  • Support in the assessment of the environmental impact in terms of local air pollution reductions and greenhouse gas mitigation from a transition to zero-emission trucks and buses in Massachusetts.
  • Dialogue with stakeholders within Massachusetts about priority opportunities for addressing truck and bus pollution within the state.
  • Support in the development of a set of recommendations for how Massachusetts can advance environmental justice, improve community health and meet state climate objectives through increased adoption of zero-emission trucks and buses.
  • Participates in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Current student/recent graduate in an undergraduate program. An environmental policy or environmental science focus is a plus.
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data and prepare reports of findings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the public interest and to advocate for environmental and public health protections. Experience on transportation electrification issues a plus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external allies.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a leader or member of teams in a dynamic and creative environment with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
  • Demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
