About The Center for Black Educator Development

Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. About the Position

The Servant Leader Apprentice (SLA) Coach will be responsible for supporting the development of a high quality, academic-centered virtual summer enrichment experience for Servant Leader Apprentices, scholars, and their parents. Servant Leader Apprentices (SLAs) attend weekly professional development sessions, receiving feedback and coaching in an effort to nurture an ecosystem of support and accountability. The Center commits to equipping future educators with pedagogical understandings and tools that extend beyond the traditionally euro-centric models currently prevalent in the field of education. By doing so, the Center hopes that our SLAs will emerge from their apprenticeship committed to entering the field of education upon graduation. This is a temporary position that ends shortly after summer programming.

Responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate a passion for supervising the growth of college-enrolled educators and high school students
  • Engage in mindset coaching to help apprentices reflect on their beliefs about themselves, students, and the work
  • Provide support and guidance for the implementation of CBED’s literacy curriculum
  • Work with the Virtual Program Manager to design, facilitate, and co-facilitate weekly professional learning workshops
  • Conduct daily quick visits and full classroom observations of high school apprentices in the virtual classroom and use CBED coaching framework to develop SLAs’ instructional practice.
  • Manage and support a cohort of Servant Leader Apprentices
  • Maintain an acute eye on the outcomes associated with scholars and Servant Leader Apprentices
  • Track progress towards goals and making strategic decisions regarding management and support
  • Develop strategies to tackle programmatic challenges and create plans to implement them

Background and experience expectations:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least five (5) years of teaching experience in lower income schools
  • At least two (2) years experience coaching and mentoring adults
  • Freedom Schools experience preferred
  • Experience with utilizing Microsoft Suite, Zoom, Google Sheets, mail merge systems technology, data tracking systems and video editing software
  • A deep commitment to The Center’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Being open to learning how to give, implement, and receive feedback
  • Solid commitment to advocacy for communities of people of color, children, and families
  • Willingness to strive for excellence in all areas, and a willingness to bring high level creative energy

Other work requirements:

  • Must have access to a dedicated workspace, phone, and internet access
  • Must attend all scheduled trainings and orientations
