About The Center for Black Educator Development

The Center for Black Educator Development exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators that reflect the cultural background and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve. Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. Learn about our key strategies to build a national Black Teacher Pipeline by visiting our website at www.thecenterblacked.org.

About the Position

As the Virtual Junior Servant Leader Coach (V-JSLC), you have experience coaching and mentoring youth, teaching high school students, and delivering curriculum.  You are able to guide students through critical reading practices and support them as they develop a research-based social action project. You must also be comfortable playing a supervisory role as your Junior Servant Leaders (JSLsP) learn about professionalism at the workplace. CBED commits to equipping future educators with pedagogical understandings and tools that extend beyond the traditionally euro-centric models currently prevalent in the field of education. By doing so, CBED hopes that our JSLs will emerge from their apprenticeship committed to entering the field of education upon graduation. This is a temporary position that ends shortly after summer programming.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create a strong community cohort experience for high school apprentices
  • Engage in mindset coaching to help apprentices reflect on their beliefs about themselves, students, and the work
  • Design, facilitate, and co-facilitate weekly professional learning workshops
  • Manage and support a cohort of Junior Servant Leader Apprentices toward program outcomes
  • Conduct virtual classroom visits to assess the quality of instruction and identify trends across sites
  • Ensure completion of required assessment forms
  • Conduct daily quick visits and full classroom observations of high school apprentices in the virtual classroom and use CBED coaching framework to develop JSLs’ instructional practice.
  • Teach liberation lessons with JSLs centered around the summer’s (complex) text
  • Facilitate lessons to guide JSLs through the completion of a social action project for the summer.

Background and experience expectations:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least five (5) years of teaching experience in lower income schools
  • At least two (2) years experience coaching and mentoring adults
  • Freedom Schools experience preferred
  • Experience with utilizing Microsoft Suite, Zoom, Google Sheets, mail merge systems technology, data tracking systems and video editing software
  • A deep commitment to The Center’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Being open to learning how to give, implement, and receive feedback
  • Solid commitment to advocacy for communities of people of color, children, and families
  • Willingness to strive for excellence in all areas, and a willingness to bring high level creative energy

Other work requirements:

  • Must have access to a dedicated workspace, phone, and internet access
  • Must attend all scheduled trainings and orientations
