Responsibilities

Program/Department Overview

The mission of EDF's Transforming Petrochemicals initiative is to improve the health and well-being of communities most harmed by the petrochemical industry, by making clear to the global industry that the status quo is no longer acceptable. This work will be grounded in solutions co-created with community experts, local and regional governments, and industry partners to advance policy opportunities to reduce pollution and exposure to toxic chemicals in the hardest-hit communities.

Overall Function

The intern will support marketing and communications for EDF’s Transforming Petrochemicals Initiative, specifically through the program’s soon-to-be-launched brand, CLEAR Collaborative. This includes writing and editing communications deliverables to support community-led efforts in the fight against petrochemical pollution, and collaborating with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Communications team to ensure CLEAR Collaborative communications are relevant, timely, and adding value to the work of EDF’s community partners.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Support communications plans to amplify the voices of communities, government leaders and environmental justice groups in the petrochemical corridor (Texas/Louisiana) working on advocacy and protecting the health of people in communities that have been historically overburdened by pollution.
  • Write content for social media, newsletters, blogs, collateral materials, reports, talking points and other materials as needed.
  • Develop a plan to report on website/social media analytics to inform best practices.
  • Conduct online research to keep EDF’s team informed about petrochemical industry expansion, health impacts and current events related to plastics/industry policy.
  • Monitor traditional and non-traditional media outlets for coverage and opportunities.
  • Assist with basic photo editing, video review and collateral design.
  • Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in/be a recent graduate of a degree-receiving program, or have one year of relevant writing or communications experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental justice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough experience with social media.
  • Able to provide thoughtful, rigorous reviews to deliverables and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stay organized, meet deadlines and maintain a proactive attitude.
  • Basic video and photo editing skills preferred.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
