Technical Field Advisor – Herpetology

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Herpetology Technical Field Advisor to support our Midwest/Northeast subregion practice and projects. The selected individual will be an experienced practitioner with recognized Herpetological Biology expertise, especially with snakes. We work to support our client’s needs across multiple service areas including renewable energy generation, transportation, transmission, and ecological restoration. The Herpetological Biologist Lead Technician will report to the Philadelphia Office Director, and potentially work closely with SWCA technical experts in the Northeast USA.   This is an hourly, temporary (without benefits) position that can be based remotely.

What you will accomplish

As a Herpetology Technical Field Advisor, you will:

  • Be recognized as a Herpetology Biology technical authority (e.g., subject matter expert) and resource to provide advice and expertise to SWCA staff, projects and clients.
  • Provide expertise to SWCA project managers on complex biology projects, which may include species-specific surveys, habitat evaluations, biological assessments/evaluations, population monitoring, and preparing various types of natural resources documentations (e.g., survey and monitoring technical reports).
  • Work closely with various team members throughout the planning and execution of projects.
  • Collaborate with clients, SWCA staff, and resource and regulatory agency staff to ensure project success.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife biology or a related field.
  • At least 15 years of professional experience as a herpetologist.
  • Strong knowledge of species-specific surveys, habitat evaluations, biological assessments/evaluations, and population monitoring.
  • Strong technical writing and QA/QC skills.
  • Working knowledge of other relevant Federal regulations impacting aquatic resources.

An employee in this Philadelphia, PA - based position can expect an hourly rate of $50.00/hour to $70.00/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
