Summer Earth Adventures Camp Counselor

Position Summary

To safely implement Aullwood Audubon Programs for children ages 5-14. Camp Counselors will be needed for approximately eight weeks over the course of the summer which will include one week of intensive training and up to seven weeks of camp. Training will occur from June 19th through June 23rd. Camp is scheduled from June 26 through August 11 for 4-8 hours per day. Summer camp staff will be subject to any CDC, State or local, or Audubon guidelines for Covid-19 safety.

Compensation:

$16.00 / hour

Essential Functions

  • Planning and executing each weeklong program session, writing lesson plans, setting and cleaning up each day’s activities including but not limited to leading outdoor discovery hikes, conducting pond explorations, live animal programs, and facilitating nature crafts and games.
  • Coaching a Counselor in Training (CiT) and/or a volunteer Summer Earth Adventures Assistant who assists with weekly classes/programs.
  • Maintaining a safe and supportive atmosphere for campers.
  • Help campers resolve conflicts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completion of at least two years of college coursework in environmental, life sciences, or education is preferred.
  • Some formal or informal teaching experience and/or curriculum development is necessary, and environmental education experience is preferred.
  • Experience in leading groups of children, initiating group activities, and group management.
  • Experience in in de-escalating conflict among children, or willing to learn and apply those skills.
  • Willing to learn Audubon’s COVID-19 guidelines and Aullwood/Audubon safety procedures and enforcing those safety precautions as necessary.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Have a flexible and adaptable personality.
  • Able to work productively in a team environment as well as independently
  • Counselors must show respect for others of all ages, races, gender, etc., as well as respect for nature and the outdoors.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Must have transportation to and from work.
  • Able to walk on trails, hills, and uneven terrain. Be able to run, sit, stand, grasp, lift, move, walk, push, reach, climb, and pull for short and extended periods of time.
  • Able to work outdoors in the heat of summer, while wearing a mask (if required).
  • Willing to learn CPR and First Aid.
  • Must be willing to have temperature checks performed each day and receive COVID-19 testing per Audubon policy, if required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or above.
