Staff Biologist - Wetlands

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Staff Biologist with experience in wetland delineations, natural resource management, and biological studies for our Pensacola, FL office.  We are seeking a candidate who is looking to develop or continue a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise, strong writing skills. Responsibilities may include writing technical reports, participating in field surveys, natural resource planning, and coordinating with a multi-disciplinary team. It is anticipated that moderate to high travel will be required for the position, with field work sometimes reaching 75% of your time.

This is a permanent, hourly, full-time, regular position, reporting to one of SWCA’s Project Managers reporting to our Pensacola, FL office. Will consider well qualified distributed candidates throughout the southeastern U.S.

What you will accomplish

• Lead and participate on field teams conducting wetland delineations, wildlife surveys, and other natural resources surveys.
• Develop project management and technical lead skills on a variety of biological resource projects.
• Conduct a variety of natural resources studies including threatened/endangered species assessments, environmental assessments, and biological reports and evaluations documentation.
• Prepare technical reports and permit applications related to CWA, ESA, NEPA, state & local regulations, and other resource planning/permitting relevant in Florida.
• Prepare reports and permit documents as the primary author and conduct quality assurance/quality control for a variety of oil and gas, electrical transmission, and renewable power generation projects.
• Take initiative and resolve issues in an independent manner.
• Work closely with SWCA’s other resource scientists, planners, on natural and cultural resource projects throughout the company.

Experience and qualifications for success

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in biological surveys and natural resource management, in either the public or private sector.
• Working knowledge and ability to lead wetland delineations per the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and/or Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) methodologies.
• Experience working with scientists, planners, engineers, contractors, agency staff.
• Proficiency in writing natural resources technical reports.

Preferred

• Experience in natural resource surveys.
• Experience in wildlife surveys.
• Experience with flora & fauna in Florida or the southeastern U.S.
• Demonstrated technical acumen specific to oil & gas, electrical transmission, and renewable power generation project preconstruction and postconstruction surveys.
• Experienced in storm water inspections in southeastern U.S. states.
• Ability to work as member of a team and independently to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner.

An employee in this Pensacola, FL position can expect an hourly pay rate of $23.00/hour to $30.00/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
