Staff Biologist

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Staff Biologist with experience in natural and biological resource surveys and assessments for our Pensacola, FL office.  We are seeking a candidate who is looking to develop or continue a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise, strong writing skills. Responsibilities may include leading and participating in field surveys, writing technical reports, natural resource planning, and coordinating with a multi-disciplinary team.  It is anticipated that moderate travel will be required for the position, with field work reaching 50% or more of your time.

This is a permanent, hourly, full-time, regular position, reporting to our Pensacola, FL office.  Preferred candidates would be located in either in Pensacola, Florida or distributed in Georgia, Alabama, or South Carolina.

What you will accomplish

  • Become a wetland delineation team lead, and conduct wetland delineations throughout the southeastern U.S.
  • Ability to perform and lead avian surveys
  • Conduct a variety of natural resources surveys and studies including threatened/endangered species assessments, environmental assessments, and biological reports and evaluations documentation.
  • Develop technical lead skills on a variety of natural resource projects.
  • Prepare technical reports and permit applications related to CWA, ESA, NEPA, state & local regulations, and other resource planning/permitting relevant in Florida and southeastern U.S.
  • Take initiative and resolve issues in an independent manner.
  • Work closely with SWCA’s other resource scientists, planners, on natural and cultural resource projects throughout the company

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in biological surveys and natural resource management, in either the public or private sector.
  • Experience working with scientists, planners, engineers, contractors, agency staff.
  • Proficiency in writing natural resources technical reports.

Preferred

  • Experience in conducting and/or leading avian surveys including nest surveys, avian use surveys, bird banding, etc.
  • Experience in leading natural resource surveys, including conducting wetland delineations within USACE and FDEP protocols.
  • Experience with flora & fauna in the southeastern U.S.
  • Experience in conducting wildlife surveys
  • Demonstrated technical acumen specific to oil & gas and solar project preconstruction and postconstruction surveys.
  • Ability to work as member of a team and independently to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner.

An employee in this Pensacola, FL_-based_ position can expect an hourly pay rate of $23.00–$30.00/h__our. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
