ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Accounting Manager role is responsible for performing and maintaining financial procedures and confirming financial compliance by preparing a company’s reports and financial statements. This role requires a highly detail-oriented and collaborative individual with excellent communication skills, who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. In addition, this role serves as a people manager for the Accounting team and will take a lead role in hiring, training, and reviewing the performance of the Accounting function. This is a full-time position reporting to our Controller.
The role is intended to be located in the San Francisco (HQ) office location, however, a remote office location will be considered for highly qualified candidates.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Manage accounting processes and activities (matrix management format)
- Lead, coordinate, and be accountable for the monthly close process
- Serve as a versatile people manager and lead the hiring, terminations, performance reviews, coaching/counseling, and professional development for direct reports
- Compile and review financial statements for accuracy and legal compliance
- Enter accounting-related information into various accounting platforms
- Identify areas of inefficiency in work papers and processes and implement process improvements
- Collaborate with internal team members to ensure accurate billing in alignment with the contracts
- Take a lead role in the annual auditing process (US and EU) and serve as a point of contact for the external auditors
- Organize and update financial records
- Support activity related to annual insurance renewal and tax preparation process
- Integrate new customers / new business into the accounting process
ABOUT YOU
You have demonstrated success as an Accounting Manager and people manager with several years of progressive accounting and audit experience. You bring your experience and enjoyment of managing a team in all aspects of the accounting process and thrive in a highly collaborative environment. You are able to accurately maintain a general ledger and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). In addition, you are highly focused on precision, have excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills, and are excited to bring your expertise to a Benefit Corporation focused on helping businesses take urgent action on climate change.
Candidates with the following qualifications will be well aligned for this role:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
- 3-5 years of audit experience and a demonstrated ability to produce and review audit-ready workpapers
- 2-5 years of management experience with demonstrated success in leading a hiring process, coaching, counseling, setting goals and development plans, and conducting performance evaluations.
- Extensive knowledge of GAAP and relevant accounting standards
- CPA or equivalent preferred
- High proficiency with ERP and/or cloud-based accounting software (i.e. Xero, Expensify, Adaptive or similar)
- Experience working with international currency desired
- Advanced Excel/G-Sheet skills
- Superb verbal and written communication skills
- Strong numeracy and analytical skills
- Excellent problem-solving and time management skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Interest in renewable energy helpful
HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
- Within 30 days, Become familiar with current month-end close procedures, general workload management, and team dynamics; gain an understanding of accounting systems, resources, and inputs necessary for daily accounting operations
- Within 60 days, Become familiar with operational team leads and build relationships necessary for continuous improvements and collaboration
- Within 90 days, Lead the coordination and completion of the close process; serve as the primary point of contact for AP and AR matters
- Within 6 months, Confidently and effectively lead the day-to-day workflow for the staff & senior accountant team
