Social Media Coordinator

Location: Portland, OR, Washington, DC or U.S. based remote

Valid unrestricted work authorization in the country in which you will be based (United States) is required at the time of application for this position.
Position Status: Full-time, Non- Exempt, Regular
Salary Level: The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $42,667 commensurate on experience

The Team

The Marketing & Communications department’s purpose is to amplify and support Mercy Corps’s mission by raising flexible funds, strengthening supporter partnerships and raising our global profile and influence, and fostering team collaboration and connectivity.

The role of the Marketing team is to guide the direction of Mercy Corps global brand and develop and implement strategies to promote brand awareness and drive a sustainable base of unrestricted financial support, particularly among mass-market supporter audiences.

The Position

The Social Media Coordinator provides support with community engagement and aids in the development of content for Mercy Corps’ global social channels including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Essential Responsibilities

CONTENT CREATION AND CHANNEL MANAGEMENT

  • Support the Social Media Manager by develop compelling content to engage, cultivate and nurture Mercy Corps’ social communities by helping to:

  • Produce and/or edit social media content, including writing, copy editing, and designing graphics/videos using Adobe Illustrator, Premier pro, After Effects (or similar), or Canva

  • Schedule and post content across owned channels

  • Pull weekly and monthly analytics for each social platform for Social Media Manager to review and report out to Marketing Team

COMMUNITY REGULATION

  • Monitor and respond to comments from organic and paid social content across platforms, flagging sensitive content to appropriate parties and filing reports with the Integrity Hotline as needed.
  • Engage in social listening to monitor and analyze trending topics and relevant social conversations to gain audience insights and competitive intelligence.

CROSS TEAM SUPPORT

  • Address social media requests to support internal and external social needs (supporting advocacy initiatives, partnership obligations, and staff thought-leadership)
  • Ensure social plans and assets are available in a centralized, accessible location (e.g. Global Social Google Drive) for use of internal teams, partners, European social teams, etc

STRATEGY AND PLANNING

  • Support the Director of Brand Marketing and the Social Media Manager to develop and execute channel strategy.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging platforms, technologies, and industry best practices.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Social Media Manager
Works Directly With: Social Media Manager, Digital Designer, Editorial Manager, Email Marketing Manager, and other members of the Marketing and Communications teams

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding international relief and development work. We are committed to actively engaging communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • 2+ years of professional experience in a relevant field, e.g. marketing, communications, PR, etc.
  • At least one year of experience (internships included) managing social media and creating social content on behalf of a brand
  • Strong familiarity with platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn
  • Interest in global affairs, humanitarian efforts, etc.
  • Interest in social media, pop culture, and current events.
  • Familiarity with social listening and monitoring tools (e.g. Sprout, Hootsuite, Social Studio, etc.) and design tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) or video production a plus
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to ensure accuracy in all deliverables.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate clearly and passionately, both in writing and verbally. Positive attitude and solution-oriented approach to work is a must

Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions

This position is either US remote within approved states or based in Portland, Oregon or Washington D.C. and requires very limited travel.

Covid-19 Vaccine Policy for US-Based Employees

Mercy Corps has determined that, in an effort to protect the health, safety, and well-being of all Mercy Corps employees working in the United States, all U.S.-based employees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, regardless of prior COVID-19 infection status. This policy is necessary to ensure not only the safety of our workforce, but the ongoing functionality of the organization.

This policy will be revised as needed to comply with federal, state, and local requirements, and to respond to changing guidance from public health authorities.
For new employees this requirement goes into effect within 10 business days of employment.  Team members that travel are expected to comply with host-country requirements, including vaccinations.  Failure to comply may impact your employment.  Proof of vaccination or exemption must be provided.
