Reports to: Regional Director

Pay Rate: $25/hr

The Center for Black Educator Development exists to (re)build a national Black Teacher Pipeline to achieve educational and racial justice by ensuring there is equity in the recruiting, training, hiring, and retention of quality educators that reflect the cultural background and share common socio-political interests of the students they serve. About the Position

During the summer, CBED conducts a seven-week apprenticeship program for aspiring high school and college-aged educators called the Freedom School Literacy Academy (FSLA).  The goal of FSLA is to affirm low-income Black students by substantially increasing the number of Black teachers working with Black students, with a specific focus on social justice.

The Site Lead (SL) helps to organize and execute day-to-day operations of CBED’s Freedom Schools Literacy Academy Summer program. The Site Lead must be capable of managing an intergenerational staff and also be a strong communication liaison for families. The Site Lead must be committed to the goals and vision of the program, able to work collaboratively with program on-site leadership (coaches), all program constituents, and be familiar with the culture and dynamics of the community. The Site Lead will serve as a positive role model and mentor for other program staff and scholars. Site Leads are responsible for collaborating with onsite coaches for the supervision of Servant Leader Apprentices and Junior Servant Leaders, ensuring their professionalism, continued development as Servant Leaders, and the strong implementation of the program’s curriculum.

This is an in-person, seasonal position from April to August 2023. Participants are asked to be available on a limited basis from April to mid-June for training, recruitment and hiring support.  From June to August participants will be required to work 5 days a week.

  • Date: Thursday, April 27th- Sunday, April 30th

  • 3 Additional Virtual Leadership Training Sessions:

  • Session 1: Wednesday, May 10th, or Saturday, May 13th

  • Session 2: Wednesday, May 17th, or Saturday, May 20th

  • Session 3: Wednesday, May 31st, or Saturday, June 3rd

*Travel expenses will be paid/reimbursed for all leadership personnel outside of the Philadelphia Region

For Program Dates in your Regions:

Memphis, TN

  • Monday, June 12th -Monday, July 31st

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure proper implementation of the CBED program model and create positive academic experiences for elementary Scholars
  • Build sustainable relationships with scholars, parents, onsite staff, and school-based liaisons, communicating updates as needed
  • Support program enrollment goals by implementing recruiting strategy in partnership with the Regional Director and Partner Site
  • Manage daily site operations such as scholar attendance, maintaining safety procedures for all staff and students on site, support assessment data tracking, manage scholar incentive system, etc.
  • Lead, plan, and execute parent engagement activities
  • Support the training and management of staff as needed; collaborate with Coaches to supervise and support Servant Leader Interns and Junior Servant Leader Interns in carrying out responsibilities
  • Support strategies to tackle programmatic challenges and implement plans to address them
  • Provide support to scholars experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties
  • Develop and manage site inventory of learning materials
  • Manage a team of enrichment specialists and ensure quality afternoon activities for scholars
  • Plan and book summer trips, buses and activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Background and experience expectations:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Education or Leadership preferred but not required) with at least one (1) year of experience as a program coordinator or site coordinator
  • Prior experience teaching or tutoring elementary school students
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and conversations for a variety of stakeholders: colleagues, parents, and students; Strong communication and training skills
  • Ability to motivate others, demonstrating patience and follow through when working with colleagues.
  • Interest in and ability to work as a part of an intergenerational and multicultural team
  • Ability to operate Zoom, manage Google Sheets and work with online data tracking systems
  • Interest in helping elementary school students achieve their personal learning goals
  • A deep commitment to The Center’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Interest in mentoring college students (apprentices) and high school students through modeling, coaching, observations, and feedback

Other work requirements:

  • Must be able to work program dates listed above
  • Must be able to attend program training dates listed above
  • Must be able to work in-person during program operating hours of Monday - Friday from 7:45 am-4:00 pm each day
  • Must be able to travel as needed
  • Must be able to operate technical equipment such as projectors and smartboard
  • Must be able to lift materials of up to 20lbs
