SENIOR POLICY ADVISOR, EU CLIMATE AND GREEN DEAL DIPLOMACY, BRUSSELS

A recognised global leader on the geopolitics of climate change, E3G is looking for a Brussels-based experienced practitioner to shape EU climate foreign policy and Green Deal diplomacy, as part of E3G’s global climate diplomacy and geopolitics team.

Context and role overview

Building a climate safe world requires global cooperation. E3G’s Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics programme aims to provide the conditions and coalitions between governments and non-state actors to empower decision-makers to drive the global transformation to climate safety. In the EU, the team is aiming to shape and support further climate action and leverage it internationally. This will require to develop cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder strategies integrating EU-level and member states politics.

The main focus of the new Senior Policy Advisor will be to develop and implement E3G’s Geopolitics and Diplomacy strategy for the EU, sustain and develop and active network of practitioners and policy makers and inform E3G’s wider strategies and activities on EU climate foreign policy and Green Deal diplomacy.

The new Senior Policy Advisor will be reporting to the Programme Leader for EU and German Climate Foreign Policy based in Berlin, and be firmly embedded in the Brussels-based team focused on shaping EU-level politics and policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the E3G Geopolitics and Diplomacy strategy for the EU to shape how the EU and member states leverage effectively internationally their own climate action, incl. in its foreign policy relating to climate, industry and trade.
  • Provide thought leadership on EU global transition partnerships and Green Deal Diplomacy, collect information and draft briefings for climate foreign policy stakeholders in the EU.
  • Organise high-level high-impact convenings in support of team outcomes, including with the EU Group of Friends for ambitious climate diplomacy.
  • Sustain and develop an active network in Brussels/EU institutions and ecosystem, meet regularly with members states representatives.
  • Coordinate with the broader E3G EU team around key legislative and political events to bring out EU international politics, international expectations, and impacts.
  • Bring out international dynamics and processes, expectations on the EU, to domestic-focused staff and stakeholders, and vice versa help decode EU processes, and manage expectations, to international-focused staff and stakeholders.
  • International travel may be required from time to time.

Profile and requirements

  • You are intellectual curious, outcome-focused, a supportive team player, and good under pressure.
  • You possess a relevant university degree.
  • You are an “EU insider” with relevant experience in EU-level politics and policy-making as part of institutions, governments, or stakeholders. As such, you have an good grasp of climate and EU politics, policy-making processes, and the European Green Deal, grounded by substantial professional experience. Experience in climate diplomacy, foreign policy, geopolitics would be considered a plus.
  • You have excellent writing and editing skills in English, and the ability to draw out a clear and compelling story on complex issues.
  • You are confident engaging stakeholders in government, industry, finance and civil society, at all levels of seniority. You are able to connect to audiences and understand interests of stakeholders outside the ‘climate bubble’.
  • You are used to operating within diverse teams, with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
  • You must have the right to work in Belgium.
  • Would be considered a plus
    • Fluency in other EU languages.
    • Experience in grant management and fundraising.

Further details

This role is offered on a 1-year fixed-term basis with the possibility of further extension.  This role is located in Brussels. E3G ASBL operates a flexible working environment, with staff expected to come to the office at least twice a week on average.

E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in the jurisdiction in which E3G employs them. E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance or visa support.

A remuneration package competitive with the non-profit sector will be offered. Salary according to E3G band and depending on experience.
