Senior Development Engineer – Materials

The Mechanics and Materials group within R&D who support product development projects, manufacturing, and product ownership of Flygt products has an opening for a Senior Development Engineer with focus within materials.

You will work as a part of a small team working on a wide variety of mechanical engineering problems including the mechanics of materials and mechanical design focusing on the development of Flygt Pumps and Mixers and their installation equipment. Duties will include investigating designs and communicating effectively with other engineers and technicians, project managers and management. There is a wide variety of tasks requiring both long term and more immediate results.

Flygt pumps and mixers are used extensively in the cycle of water, transporting water from recipients to water treatment plants, to consumers, to wastewater treatment plants and then back to recipients. Our pumps and mixers are used in a variety of applications from the dewatering of tunnels to the production of biogas. Our products are made from cast irons, steels, polymers and plastics and are exposed to harsh working environments and require a correct material selection and surface treatments. Our products are in contact with many liquids and a high corrosion resistance of our products is a necessity. We have large in-house foundries and many suppliers of castings of metallic parts with whom we aim to find optimal solutions for casting, heat treatments and machining.

This position is located in Stockholm where we have our main R&D offices and laboratory.

Responsibilities/tasks

• Coordinating with and informing manufacturing and other R&D staff about material properties and selection to optimize production and product performance.
• Actively participating in development projects to find optimal solutions.
• Analyzing of components and products from a materials and corrosion perspective.
• Developing and implementing methods for effective selection of optimal materials for our products.
• Defining experiments to be carried out in our own laboratory to verify designs.
• Monitoring industrial usage of newer materials to be able to keep our design groups up to date with new materials.
• Supporting our sales companies with choice of materials for customer applications.

Qualifications

You have at least a Master of Science or similar education including Material Science.

To be successful in this role you should have several years of industrial experience and a thorough knowledge of metals, corrosion mechanisms and the fundamentals of polymers.

Excellent skills in English, both oral and written, are essential to perform this work. Swedish is also advantageous.
