Introduction:
In less than a single human lifetime, we have lost at least 2.9 billion breeding adult birds. Following the 2019 publication of these findings in Science, the authors and collaborators, including American Bird Conservancy (ABC), have been working to recover bird populations through an initiative called Road to Recovery. Road to Recovery is now a multi-institutional partnership, with ABC serving as a key conservation partner and a host organization for Fellows. The partnership is targeting new science, including by using co-production and social science, to understand causes of decline. We are working to change policy, communicating with the public, and leveraging large-scale funding to recover bird populations.
The Road to Recovery initiative’s International Subcommittee has the goal of working with others across the hemisphere to recover bird populations across their full annual cycles. ABC seeks a current graduate student or young professional to contribute to this work. The ideal candidate will be from and/or currently living in Latin America or the Caribbean, and will gain valuable experience with biodiversity conservation, decision-making, research, and international partnerships. The fellow will receive a stipend ranging $30,000 - $35,000 for work spanning one year.

Primary Duties:
The fellow will contribute to the International Subcommittee of the Road to Recovery partnership through the following activities:
Help ensure that membership in the International Subcommittee is more representative of countries across the Americas. Expand and strengthen the network of partners who support Road to Recovery goals and objectives.
Conduct a gap analysis to identify high priorities for strengthening the stewardship of migratory bird wintering grounds and stopover habitats outside of the United States. Obtain input from a diversity of stakeholders and identify opportunities for potential partnerships.
Increase collaboration between Species Working Groups and professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean to advance species recovery efforts. Seek expertise and best practices from outside of the United States to support and enhance existing Species Working Groups and their research on migratory habitat connectivity and full life cycle science.
Organize and facilitate a Road to Recovery workshop series or engagement sessions, which will include the following: 1) Create and distribute promotional materials (invitations, agendas). 2) Coordinate speakers and pre-speaker meetings. 3) Manage workshop registration. 4) Post-workshop: compile chat and Q&A, write and distribute workshop reports work to expand and strengthen international partnerships.
Position Requirements:
Academic, professional, and/or informal experience with birds and bird conservation. The Fellow must hold a degree and/or research experience in biology, ecology, social science, or a field centrally relevant to bird conservation.
The ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a range of partners across multiple countries and contexts, with government, academic, nonprofit, and community partners.
The ability to work effectively and independently in a fully remote environment. The ability to efficiently set up and facilitate online workshops and meetings. Experience with project management.
Strong communications skills.
This position requires the ability to work in both Spanish and English. Native, technical fluency in written and spoken Spanish. Technical fluency in written and spoken English. The ability to speak Portuguese and/or French would be beneficial but is not required.
