What is the opportunity?

The Project Accountant is responsible for supporting project managers and program directors in the financial management of their projects.  This may include reviewing grant agreements, budgets, and work plans; posting entries into the general ledger; analyzing financial transactions and statements for compliance; financial reporting to grantors; and supporting audits. This is a full-time position reporting to the Regional Controller, Director of Accounting, or Accounting Manager.  A successful Project Accountant will:

• Manage all accounting-related functions for assigned projects, including billing, collections, adjusting journal entries, and review of timesheets.
• Assist project teams with contract reviews and compliance with financial requirements.
• Maintain project-related financial records, including contracts and change orders.
• Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to project management.
• Support project managers with project budgets and forecasts as needed.
• Coordinate with in-country accountants related to assigned projects.
• Assist with the development of new policies and procedures.
• Document financial transactions by entering account information.
• Recommend financial actions by analyzing accounting options.
• Summarize current financial status by collecting data and preparing financial reports.
• Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents.
• Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
• Maintain financial security by following internal controls.
• Prepare special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
• Maintain grantor confidence and protect operations by keeping financial information confidential.

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.

• 3 to 5 years of applicable work experience required.

• Experience in grant accounting, the construction industry, or project management preferred.

• Intermediate Excel skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Knowledge of commonly used accounting, business, and manufacturing concepts and practices (nonprofit accounting experience preferable).

• Excellent analytical skills; ability to work through complex issues and employ reasoning skills to solve problems.

• International and multi-currency accounting experience a plus.

• An understanding of and ability to work with volunteers and all levels of staff, including staff in developing countries.

• Capable of working with a team toward common goals and overcoming diverse obstacles.

• Ability to organize personal workloads and maintain a well-functioning office.

• Strong integrity and stewardship.

• Accounting software experience required; ERP experience preferred.

• Home internet bandwidth strong enough to support video conferencing and other job-related responsibilities is required.

• Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
