The Program Manager – Livestock Technology and One Health will facilitate developing and adopting innovative technologies along the livestock value chain (animal nutrition, animal breeding and genetics, animal health and production management, processing, packaging, and cold chain maintenance). S/he will work with the Resource Mobilization and Program teams to leverage resources to support programmatic activities. S/he will also be responsible to collaborate with the government, related private sector and other development projects to provide further support to livestock enterprises, bring efficiency in the value chain and increase profitability. S/he will work closely with academic and research institutions in research and development and generate new knowledge in all domains of livestock development.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES**: (**including approximate percentage effort)
Innovation and application of technology in the livestock value chain (60%)
Work closely with the signature program team and cluster team to execute the Livestock Technology strategy along the livestock value chain (not limited to production only).
Develop operational guidelines and training manuals on livestock technologies for Signature Projects.
Support the cluster team in designing project activities on livestock technologies and work in coordination with implementation partners and cluster team for effective delivery.
Explore and develop partnerships with private sectors including but not limited to insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, vaccine producers, and feed manufacturers to ensure that their services are accessible to project beneficiaries.
Work in close coordination with local, provincial, and central level governments to identify bottlenecks in livestock development policies and provide strategic support.
Build the capacity of staff, project partners, Community Agro-Vet Entrepreneurs (CAVEs)/technicians, cooperatives, and farmers to improve livestock value chain activities, along with follow-up and backstopping.
Collaborate with appropriate technical institutions/technical partners for efficiency in capacity building.
Prepare an action plan and support its implementation to ensure that the livestock products that are being produced are consistent with the market demand.
Promote climate-smart livestock production practices in the Signature Programs.
Conduct field-level research, studies, trials, and farmer field schools to generate new ideas.
Generate new knowledge in all domains of livestock value chains and ensure its dissemination to a wider audience.
Collaboration and Resource Mobilization (20%)
One Health (15%)
Develop tools and techniques to identify One Health core competencies at the Signature Program level.
Support government stakeholders to plan and implement One Health strategies and programs to minimize public health hazards from milk, meat and other animal products.
Design/develop/deliver training curricula and content based on the required competencies and build the capacities of CAVEs, project team, and partners.
Provide regular follow-up, monitoring, and technical support to strengthen One Health strategies at the field level.
Conduct periodic meetings, workshops, and seminars with like-minded organizations to share Heifer’s work on One Health and explore possibilities for collaboration.
May perform other job-related duties as assigned (5%)
