About The Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC)

The Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC) is a coalition of organizations representing the world's major tropical forests: the Alliance of Indigenous Communities of the Indonesian Archipelago (AMAN) in Southeast Asia; the Mesoamerican Alliance of Forest Peoples (AMPB) in Mesoamerica; the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) in the Amazon region; the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) in Brazil; and the Network of Indigenous and Local Populations for the Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPALEAC) in the Congo Basin. Together, they carry the voice of indigenous peoples and local communities in 24 countries. The Alliance is governed by a Leadership Council, led by two Co-Chairs, and a Secretariat, led by the Executive Secretary.

The GATC is developing a financial platform, the Shandia Platform, that enables its member organizations to access climate funds more directly. Shandia will connect international donors with indigenous peoples and local communities’ (IP and LC) organizations, providing investment that: expands indigenous land tenure; strengthens territorial management; mitigates climate change; protects biodiversity; and restores degraded ecosystems.

About the Position

The consultant will prepare, coordinate, organize and implement the GATC’s annual work plan, providing administrative and logistical support to the GATC Secretariat and supporting the realization of the GATC planned activities.

Responsibilities

• Provide administrative, logistical, secretarial and general coordination support to the Executive Secretary to advance the day-to-day coordination of the GATC;
• Support the Executive Secretary and the Leadership Council in coordinating the planned activities, in particular the joint participation of members of the Global Alliance in international negotiation events on climate change, biodiversity, and other lines of work;
• Provide analysis and strategic information on topics of interest to the GATC’s member organizations;
• Follow up on specific projects and lines of activity entrusted by the Executive Secretary;
• Advise the Secretariat and the GATC Technical Team in the preparation of a strategic plan and the corresponding budget;
• Support the Executive Secretary to implement a fundraising strategy that takes advantage of financing opportunities to strengthen grassroots organizations and the joint structure of the GATC;
• Facilitate the preparation of activity and expense report for donors
• Advise the Executive Secretary in the preparation of the terms of reference for the communication, technical, and administrative support services;
• Collaborate in building the administrative capacities of the GATC, in coordination with the GATC’s fiscal sponsors.

Requirements

• University degree/master's degree, preferably in International Studies, Business Administration, Finance, Law, Economics or other related field;
• Minimum 5 years of post-graduate professional experience;
• Fluent in English;
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary projects and meetings with diverse stakeholders and interest groups, including: community representatives; financiers; entrepreneurs; and government representatives;
• Experience working in international negotiations;
• Knowledge of indigenous peoples and local communities’ (IPLCs) issues, as well as the national and international struggle for the recognition of their rights;
• Familiarity IPLC’s demands in international advocacy arenas;
• Experience working with social organizations, preferably indigenous or local community organizations;
• Excellent writing skills and ability to write proposals and reports;
• Experience in planning, monitoring, and evaluation processes of international projects;
• Experience in international fundraising for medium- and large-scale projects.
• Belonging to an IPLC a plus
• Prior knowledge of the GATC agenda a plus.

Language

• Fluency in at least two languages customary in the communications of GATC: English; Spanish; French; Portuguese; or Indonesian
