Responsibilities

Program/Department Overview

The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), ensuring that the science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, OCS provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization. The OCS team works on projects across all of EDF’s programs, translating natural and social science basic and applied research into actionable ideas for colleagues who are designing programs and projects. The Fellow will work with OCS and report to a Lead Senior Scientist in OCS.

Overall Function

In collaboration with 20 scientists in China, US, and Canada, EDF’s Office of Chief Scientist is drafting a book in Chinese language on “Oil and Gas Methane Emission and Quantification” to raise awareness and build capacity on methane emission measurement from the oil and gas sector in China. Under the supervision of a Senior Scientist, who is the chief author of the book, the intern will have the opportunity to work with some of the top methane scientists in the world, develop their reviewing and editing skills, and learn about the most recent advancements in the growing methane science field. The intern’s contribution will be acknowledged in the preface of the book.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with Senior Scientist of the Office of Chief Scientist.
  • Provide English to Chinese translation and proof reading of book.
  • Provide book draft format editing, reproduce figures, check quotations from peer-reviewed journal papers, and ensure accuracy and consistency throughout all chapters.
  • Research references & conduct fact checking.
  • Participate in advancing EDF’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in/be a recent graudate of a University/degree program.
  • Excellent Chinese (Mandarin) writing and reading skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Coursework in science or engineering, or other related subjects.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills.

Location

U.S. Remote with a possibility to work hybrid out of New York or Washington DC office. The supervisor for this position is based out of Canada and works in pacific timezone.

Full time, 35 hours per week

Compensation

This internship would involve compensation for work paid at a rate competitive with leading non-profits at $17/hr.
