Job Summary:

As a coop/ intern with Li-Cycle you will have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects for an innovative technology that provides a sustainable pathway for critical materials. The Metallurgical Intern/Co-op student has basic understanding of the aqueous chemistry and separation technology of metals.  You will have the opportunity to learn about recovering and refining critical materials via a water-based process to contribute to the circular economy.  This position will assist and prepare samples and reagents, conduct tests, measure and record potential data and submit samples for analysis.

The ideal intern/co-op student will be a driven individual with high attention to detail and organization, curiosity and a positive “can-do” attitude.

Primary Responsibilities (to include but not limited to): The intern/co-operative student will work on the following tasks for 3 to 9 months:

  • Planning, organizing, and preparing samples and necessary reagents prior to conducting testwork
  • Arranging and constructing experimental setups coupled with necessary equipment as required
  • Performing field level risk assessment prior to conducting tests
  • Conducting a variety of tests including leaching, solid-liquid separation, precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, crystallization by following the standard operating procedures to support the plant operation
  • Calibrating equipment, measuring, and recording data, and communicating test results with supervisor
  • Preparing and submitting representative samples with proper label for assaying
  • Performing regularly housekeeping to maintain a clean working environment
  • Assisting in maintaining inventory of consumables
  • Performing troubleshooting of metallurgical techniques and methods, and LIMS training
  • Following all company, local, state, and federal health, safety and environmental policies, and quality regulations
  • Reporting any accidents, safety violations, discrepancies, or other concerns to the supervisor

Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled students in an undergraduate level chemical engineering/metallurgical engineering/chemistry or similar program are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Should have an overall average grade of 3.0
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft word, excel and power point
  • Highly flexible with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail and team player
  • Experience in handling solid, liquid, and gaseous samples and various equipment is a plus
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.A. without sponsorship
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude

Working Conditions:

  • May have exposure to reagents, solid and aqueous wastes, and metal salts
  • Must be wear proper personal protective equipment including gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hat, respirator, and face shield as required to in the facilities
  • Physical ability to lift 40 lb+
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required
