Responsibilities

Program/Department Overview

The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the scientific backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be effective in this role, OCS works with staff from across EDF and provides programmatic support for all EDF scientists as well as fosters relationships with scientists in academia, government and industry. Resided in OCS, the Climate Science Team plays a central role in advancing policy-relevant science and making sure all climate-related initiatives and communications across EDF are based on the best available science.

Overall Function

The Intern will greatly improve EDF’s capacity to grasp the hydrogen research landscape and projects in East Asia and identify knowledge gaps, providing valuable information to shape our research and communications strategy in East Asia. This includes summarizing peer-reviewed literature, reports, and white papers and translate them for technical and non-technical audiences. The intern will focus on the literature that addresses the climate impact/benefit of clean hydrogen to replace fossil fuel in various economic sectors, and their feasibility, within the East Asia context. The Intern will report to a Scientist in OCS.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Perform literature reviews and find, collect and analyze scientific information, with a focus on hydrogen as a decarbonization strategy in the East Asia context.
  • Participate in shaping EDF’s communications, advocacy, and outreach to policy makers, the public, and other stakeholders.
  • Communicate research products across programs and levels of expertise as needed.
  • Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in or a recent graduate from a University degree program.
  • Coursework or experience with hydrogen applications (such as fuel cells), life cycle analysis, and/or broad climate and clean energy solutions.
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methods of a relevant technical or scientific field.
  • Demonstrated skill in finding and synthesizing scientific research.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office and Internet research.
  • Intellectual agility and comfort with working across disciplines and learning new skills.
  • Understand scientific papers written in an East Asian language, such as Mandarin, Korean, or Japanese is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
