The Grant Writer works closely with staff lawyers and scientists to gather information and produce compelling materials for funders including Letters of Interest, Proposals, Interim and Final Reports to raise funds primarily from public and private foundations. The Grant Writer will work closely a team of relationship managers on the Leadership Giving and Foundations team to engage Ecojustice’s highest level of supporters.

About The Role

Ecojustice’s Grant Writer will be responsible for researching funders, writing and coordinating grant applications, reporting to funders, and maintaining a donor database. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop tailored, strategic, persuasive, and creative content for key funders; primarily focused on, but not limited to, public and private foundations.
  • In collaboration with the relationship managers, identify the materials and content required for funders.
  • Write, modify, and enhance detailed persuasive cases for support/proposals, reports and other information for donors, tailored to their interests and needs.
  • Ensure that written content reflects Ecojustice’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation and expresses a mindset of abundance in philanthropy.
  • Ensure that accurate reports and financial accountabilities are prepared in advance of funding deadlines.
  • Identify and evaluate new funding sources to build viable prospect lists.
  • In collaboration with the Philanthropy Team, set annual goals, develop an annual work plan, and help develop and implement more inclusive and equitable fundraising practices.
  • With the Foundations and Leadership Giving Team, develop and report on Key Performance Indicators to monitor progress and modify as needed.

Typically, we find that people who succeed in this role bring:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role within the charitable sector
  • Experience writing successful applications for sustainable funding from foundations, trusts, and/or other grant-making bodies
  • Proficiency in communication and drafting funding proposals, reports, and developing persuasive informative proposals
  • Basic budgeting and numeracy skills, including software and data entry proficiency with spreadsheet, documentation, and philanthropy platforms
  • An understanding of Ethical and Imagine Canada Fundraising principles and CRA guidelines
  • The ability to establish and cultivate strong and positive relationships internally and externally
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and use independent judgement to move projects forward smoothly with minimal supervision
