The Financial Manager is a key member in ensuring the successful operation of the budgetary and operational control systems on behalf of the US Region team. They will develop, track, and analyze budgets and fundraising proposals and reports, will organize and present financial data for reporting, as well as review contracts and grants. They will oversee all financial processes for various departments within the US Region and lead and/or participate in Mission Workstreams. The Financial Manager will also work closely with the US Region Finance Director, and the Mission Finance & Operations team to help set a standard for best practice on reports and data integrity, working to fill capacity gaps across the team and to mentor and collaborate with other mission finance staff. This requires an interest and understanding of our mission work, a willingness to engage with staff to create budgets that support our work, and deep integrity to uphold EDF's high financial standards. The Financial Manager will represent US Region workstream finances as appropriate to other departments in the organization and work closely with a large number of stakeholders within EDF who work closely with the cross-cutting US Region team. They will work with mission staff and those in other departments to ensure the production of timely, accurate and insightful financial information. They will be a member of the Mission Finance team within the Enterprise Operations Department, partnering with other Mission Finance staff and staff of the Finance and Development Departments.
Produce regular reports of actual vs. budget results, explaining income and expense line-item variances; advising Mission decision-makers and Finance staff on trends and issues of concern; and working with Mission Finance leadership to propose actionable solutions to identified concerns.
Develop annual budget for US Region departments, ensuring timelines met, EDF systems and processes are followed, and accurate budgets are submitted.
Supervise Program Financial Analyst(s), serving as a source of technical expertise and identifying and resolving any challenges to the team's high performance.
Work closely within the EDF matrix to ensure there is financial coordination and efficient processes in place in order to deliver a comprehensive budget lens as they relate to EDF’s strategic initiatives.
In coordination with other Mission Finance staff, lead and/or participate in development of annual budget for one or more Mission Workstreams, acting as a thought partner where applicable
Review and distribute month-end reports of actual vs. budget results; investigate, analyze, and explain variances from budget for income and expense line items, and advise on trends, opportunities for improvement, and issues of concern.
Perform ad-hoc financial analysis that will provide decision-making support on strategic initiatives.
Organize data and create clear and accurate presentations, including spreadsheets, charts, graphs, and other insightful summary material that helps mission leadership and staff make resourcing decisions. Present complex financial data to both financial and non-financial audiences.
Working with development and Mission staff, create budgets, financial proposals, and reports for donors and new fundraising opportunities. Monitor grant-level financial activity, identify variances in grant-level budget management, and advise on any necessary course corrections.
Oversee Funds managed and utilized by various US Region departments to ensure proper deployment of resources in alignment with donor intent, internal policies and workplans and GAAP rules.
Under the guidance of Mission Finance leadership, work with the Finance and accounting staff to insure coordination of financial management efforts and timely resolution of issues.
Provide oversight on contracting and purchasing for US Region and assigned workstreams, ensuring processes and documentation are in accordance with EDF guidelines, with special attention to potential international issues.
Oversee financial staff, as well as approving position requests
As applicable, approve invoices, ensure the proper coding of expense items.
Review and approve new project budget proposals for fundraising opportunities outside of the annual budget process, financial reports for funders as needed.
Assist in educating and training staff on budget and financial policies and processes.
Participate in departmental meetings and trainings with both the Enterprise Operations and mission teams.
Serve as a source of technical expertise and identifying and resolving any challenges to the team's high performance, which includes being a system expert and key resource to both mission staff and mission finance teams.
Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting or professional certification.
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a financial analyst role or in a Finance and Accounting department with a B.A., or an advanced degree with at least 3 years of experience, including non-profit experience.
Experience working with government nonprofit grants experience is a plus
Proven knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting: the ability to perform complex financial analysis. Experience with forecasting, budgeting and reporting SAAS is a plus.
Familiarity with GAAP principles and thorough understanding of non-profit accounting principles and grants management.
Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Experience using ERP/Cloud based Financial systems to a proficient level
