New Moms is a nonprofit organization with an $8 million budget and a staff of over 60. At New Moms, young moms, 24 and under, take powerful first steps toward economic mobility and family well-being. Our 2-Generation approach puts families experiencing poverty in control of their goals and unleashes their potential. New Moms’ headquarters is located on the west side of Chicago in the Austin neighborhood. Our East Garfield Park location includes all Workforce Development programming as well as our social enterprise, Bright Endeavors, which provides paid transitional jobs for young moms. We also have an office in Oak Park serving the near western suburbs.

About the Job:

This full-time position is responsible for providing financial capabilities coaching to participants to increase knowledge and practice of financial health to improve economic mobility and family well-being. This role is integrated across all our programs to ensure all participants have access to financial coaching. This role also provides technical assistance with other program coaches to help participants set and attain financial goals. The Financial Capabilities Coach will champion all New Moms values including our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, in both strategic planning and performance. This position is located at our Oak Park office and spends significant time at our other locations in Austin and East Garfield Park. Some evening hours are required. Starting Salary: $44,000 - $46,800 DOQ

Key Job Responsibilities:

Direct Service (80%)

  • Provide early and ongoing one-on-one financial coaching and counseling to participants in the following New Moms departments: Housing (40%), Workforce Development/Academic Coaching (30%), and Family Support (30%)
  • Assist participants in creating initial and supplemental budgets and balance sheets including but not limited to gain or loss of employment or changes in wages
  • Assist all participants with understanding their net income and improving cash flow and net worth (whether increased income through wages or benefits, or decreased expenses)
  • Pull and discuss credit reports for data and scores with every financial participant at least once every (6) months, or as needed
  • Coordinate and provide direct coaching to participants, helping them envision, set, and achieve their own financial goals around money management, credit, saving, debt reduction, credit repair, and taxes,
  • Provide group coaching by using New Moms’ selected financial curriculum at least one time per year in all our parent support groups and academic coaching cohorts as well as in all our Job Training cohorts,
  • Ensure participants are enrolled in New Moms’-recommended banking products and provide education regarding using the products as needed
  • Responsible for both program coordination and direct service delivery of one-on-one and/or group financial coaching, resources navigation and referring participants to all necessary community resources that encourages overall economic stability
  • Utilize tools and trainings to help execute the financial coaching program that effectively reaches and impacts participants
  • Engage in ongoing follow-up with participants as needed

Staff Training and Technical Assistance (15%)

  • Provide training and support to staff with developing financial coaching mindsets and practices, instruction guides, and coaching materials as appropriate
  • Provide program teams with support in regard to financial capabilities education materials and Focus Cards including in onboarding of new program staff
  • Works with other New Moms staff to integrate services across the Agency, collaborating with staff and other collateral sources on specific case-related issues
  • Maintains current knowledge of best and promising practices with financial coaching strategies, related products, and opportunities for improving financial coaching at New Moms
  • Maintains working relations with other social service or public agencies; providing linkage of participants to appropriate financial resources and advocates for participants as necessary; Secures appropriate release and consent forms and facilities inter-agency referrals as needed

Other (5%)

  • Performs written and electronic recordkeeping functions as required for both internal and external databases on a timely basis
  • Upholds the New Moms’ Executive Skills Coaching approach which is grounded in racial equity
  • Regularly participates in agency and program staff meetings, as well as professional group seminars or conferences to enhance professional knowledge and job skills; Attend Heartland Alliance Wealth & Wellness training as required for position
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling and guidance, rehabilitation counseling, social work, psychology, pastoral counseling, family therapy, children and families or related human service field required

  • Experience in the area of providing financial coaching in a community-based organization preferred

  • Experience in consumer credit or finance preferred

  • Strong digital and technology skills including Microsoft software applications

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing

  • Sound professional judgment and analytical ability

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, projects, and deadlines concurrently

  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team approach model, taking individual responsibility and autonomy while also working well as part of a team

  • Ability to work 1 evening a week(required)

  • Valid driver’s license, with safe driving record and valid insurance

  • Access to a car and/or ability to use public transportation required

Other Considerations:

  • New Moms employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are not able to receive the vaccine for medical or religious reasons, you may seek approval for an exemption through the Director of HR.
  • This is an on-site position with a primary office at our Oak Park location, regularly spending time at our Austin and E Garfield Park locations. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule which could include up to two (2) days per week of remote work if requested. All staff are required to be in the office on Tuesdays, which is our company Core Day.
