Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing.
NRDC is seeking an Equity Advocate to work with the Climate & Clean Energy team in our DC, NY, SF office.
Position Summary
The industrial sector produces many of the products and materials we rely on. It takes mined inputs like limestone, iron ore, and alumina and turns them into raw materials like cement, steel, and aluminum that are used all throughout the economy. The manufacturing processes by which many industrial materials are made require very high temperatures and very large amounts of energy. Today, these processes depend primarily on burning fossil fuels in applications that cannot be electrified.
Further, a large proportion of the greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution in the sector is from process emissions from unavoidable chemical reactions necessary to produce goods from raw materials. The result is that in the U.S., heavy industry is responsible for roughly one-quarter of economy-wide GHGs and that is expected to increase through 2050 -- the timeframe by when scientists tell us the global economy must achieve net-zero emissions if we are to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
Under business as usual, the industrial sector is on track to become the largest source of U.S. GHG emissions within the decade. At the same time, products like cement and steel are foundational to modern life and have few, if any, viable substitutes. Thus, promptly decarbonizing heavy industry will be essential to meeting our climate goals.
At the same time, federal and private opportunities and funds are rapidly being funneled into hydrogen development and hubs. Green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy and water, could prove a particularly valuable tool for sectors where technical hurdles prevent decarbonization via direct electrification – such as aviation, maritime shipping, and select heavy industries. However, hydrogen development also has the potential to be employed as a greenwashing tool, encouraging near-term investments in fossil fuel infrastructure premised on future repurposing to hydrogen or offering a lifeline to fossil fuel incumbents.
As a result, this role will support our efforts to advance more equitable industrial decarbonization and hydrogen policies as well as provide internal support for broader equity and environmental justice initiatives.
