50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now, is a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids, regardless of their address. We develop local education leaders by providing them with the research, tools, and ideas needed to create learning environments that best meet every child’s needs. 50CAN operates campaigns in Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Tennessee and is led by CEO & Founder Marc Porter Magee.
About the position and key responsibilities
As a key member of the national team, the development director is a natural connector who is willing to partner closely with local executive directors and national executive team members to ensure we have the funding we need to secure big wins for kids. This person excels at development strategy, cultivating donors, prospecting, and securing gifts. This person is fantastic with systems, processes, procedures, and tools to ensure a smooth-running development shop that can handle dozens of requests at a time.
This person is a great writer who is able to bring clarity, inspiration, and persuasion to our proposals and reports. This person is a great manager and mentors two direct reports: the development associate and the grant manager. The development director position is remote, with travel to our state and national offices as well as conferences and events approximately 6-12 times a year. This person will have at least 5 years of development experience, with previous experience in education and advocacy fundraising preferred.
Key responsibilities include:
Oversee the development and execution of traditional fundraising efforts with campaign leaders and executive leadership
Manage the development team and oversee processes and systems
Draft and edit development materials
Create and execute online fundraising campaigns, including peer to peer campaigns, flash fundraising, social media sharing event, crowdfunding, donation matching drives, event integrated fundraisers, year-end giving, and other special appeals

Fast-paced, urgent, and high capacity. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work quickly, under pressure, and with strong attention to detail, including some weekend and evening hours as necessary. Experience in fast-paced education non-profits strongly preferred. Process and solution-oriented thinking, strong organizational and time-management skills, and attention to detail.
A superb storyteller with a proven ability to consistently deliver error-free, clear, and compelling writing. The ideal candidate will have a track record of delivering exceptionally strong writing, as well as the ability to copy-edit their work (and the work of others).
Able to work effectively with development teams and programmatic leaders, building fundraising capacity throughout the organization as needed. The ideal candidate will consistently think about how to codify what’s working so our campaigns can replicate success as easily as possible. This person has experience collaborating with a diverse and decentralized staff. This person is a strong team player with awesome people skills, a great attitude, and a strong orientation towards customer service.
Working at 50CAN
This position is remote. The salary range for this position is $90,000-$120,00.
