Supervisor: Director of International Programs, Director of Migratory Bird Habitat in Latin America & Caribbean, or other
Location: Flexible; Remote; Anywhere in the US
INTRODUCTION
The mission of American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is to conserve birds and their habitats – the places birds need to thrive – across the Americas. We are a growing group of 125+ dedicated staff, located across the United States and with a network of partners from Canada to Chile. Each year, we grow in budget and staff, and we deliver more results aimed at preventing bird species extinctions and reversing declines that are reducing populations of nearly all bird groups. Our work is guided by our principles, which include a commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI).
ABC is looking for someone to lead project development and implementation for projects that contribute to ABC’s overall strategic framework and annual plan by working directly with ABC’s partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop and implement projects once funding is secured. This includes regularly communicating with partners to track project progress as well as to resolve problems that may arise.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Manage bird conservation projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. Projects to be determined, but could include those for:
- Globally threatened species (typically range-restricted tropical species).
- Projects typically focus on creation, management, and sustainability of protected areas, including habitat restoration activities, such as tree planting and artificial nest boxes.
- Priority migratory bird species at important wintering or stopover sites within priority areas called BirdScapes.
- Projects typically focus on maintaining and enhancing habitat within working landscapes (such as shade agroforestry, sustainable cattle ranching) outside protected areas, but may also involve protected area creation, management, and sustainability. Activities may include:
- Implementing community education, outreach and other activities to reduce threats and improve local livelihoods to incentivize conservation.
- Exploring financial mechanisms to scale the restoration of degraded lands.
- Work with partner organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop and implement bird conservation projects.
- Fundraise for projects with ABC’s Development, Finance, Operations, and Communications Teams, and with partner organizations.
- Create and manage sub grant agreements with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Review partner reports and file in Cloud based file sharing network.
- Track the financial and programmatic results of projects and communicate project results within ABC and to the public.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Advanced degree in business, non-profit management, biological sciences, wildlife management, or a related field with knowledge of conservation, ornithology, and management needs of birds in the Americas.
- At least five years’ experience of conservation experience in Latin American or Caribbean, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Well organized with keen attention to detail and results oriented. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines, with the tenacity and creativity to solve difficult problems, and an entrepreneurial spirit to pursue new conservation opportunities.
- An outgoing, positive, persuasive manner and predisposition for collaboration, with ability to work both independently and as part of teams, as well as with international partners.
- Enthusiasm for ABC’s mission to conserve wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas.
- Willing and able to travel. Travel could involve 4-5 trips per year, each lasting 7-14 days.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills in English. Proficiency in working in Spanish required. Proficiency in Portuguese desirable.
- Background screening required.
- Authorized to work in the US or Permanent Resident Card.
BENEFITS:
- Lodging, meals, and transportation covered for work-related travel away from home.
- Rental vehicle or personal mileage reimbursement where applicable.
