Systemic Justice is hiring a

Climate Justice Organiser

🇳🇱 Europe, NL 📝 CONTRACTOR

Systemic Justice is looking for a Climate Justice Organiser who can help plan and execute our work to build BIPOC power in the European climate movement.

Position type: Full-time (4 days per week, 32-hour work week)

Duration: 12 months

Pay range: 27-37 EUR per hour

Location: Remote, based in Europe

About the role

The Climate Justice Organiser will be involved in helping the development of Systemic Justice’s climate justice work, coordinating projects, maintaining our relationships with stakeholders, and supporting the planning and rollout of a European BIPOC climate justice summit, as well as a podcast and speaker series.

With this project, we will support building the power of Black, indigenous, and people of colour-led organisations working on the intersection of climate and racial, social, and economic justice. By connecting BIPOC leaders and BIPOC youth activists and amplifying their collective voices we will help ensure that Europe’s attempt at addressing the climate crisis is targeting the many harms that BIPOC communities are resisting across the region.

Our work is rooted in our foundational values of anti-oppression, intersectionality, and justice. We are looking for someone who shares these values and for whom the prospect of operationalising these in our day-to-day work, both internally and externally, is an exciting prospect.

About Systemic Justice and the project

Systemic Justice supports communities in their fight for justice and equality. It is the first Black-led, majority BPOC organisation in Europe working on strategic litigation and it is currently developing projects focussed on climate justice and social protection.

Systemic Justice is launching a coalition of Black, indigenous, and people of colour-led organisations and youth initiatives to help ensure that Europe’s response to the climate crisis properly addresses its intersectional harms, and to build a shared vision of true climate justice. Black, indigenous, and communities of colour in Europe are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. Addressing the climate crisis while addressing compounded harms like structural racism is at the heart of Systemic Justice’s intersectional approach to climate justice.

Systemic Justice is coordinating with strategic partners in Europe to optimise synergies and amplify each other’s work to build BIPOC power in the climate movement. By building on this collaboration and creating a network of community-led climate justice organisations and movements, we can build collective power to ensure that an intersectional approach becomes central to the current climate debate, as well as legislative and policy efforts, to create meaningful and significant structural changes that will enhance the lives of BIPOC communities disproportionately affected by the climate crisis.

Towards this objective, Systemic Justice is undertaking the following three tracks of work:

  1. BIPOC Climate Justice Summit: Bringing together BIPOC (youth) leaders in Europe’s climate justice space for a pilot summit to build a positive vision for climate work that responds to the intersecting and disproportionate harms BIPOC communities face as a result of the climate crisis.
  2. BIPOC Climate Justice Coalition: The establishment of a coalition of BIPOC-led climate justice organisations, movements, and collectives, as well as youth initiatives that can provide mutual support, problem-solving, co-learning, and knowledge sharing to strengthen and uplift their work on climate justice.
  3. BIPOC Climate Justice Podcast, Speaker Series, and Campaigning: A podcast (6-12 episodes), a speaker series (6 one-hour interactive virtual events), and a social media campaign to uplift and promote the work of BIPOC-led organisations and youth initiatives in the climate justice space.

This work will be amplified by connecting it to networks in Europe working on racial justice, social justice, and disability justice.

What you’ll do

  • Join monthly calls with strategic partners, working with Systemic Justice’s Founder to create a dedicated time for cross-organisational updates on climate justice work, track next steps, follow up with partners, manage communications with different stakeholders;
  • Develop more detailed thinking about Systemic Justice’s climate justice work, developing a work plan for all three strands of the project (BIPOC climate justice summit; BIPOC climate justice coalition; BIPOC climate justice podcast, speaker series, and campaigning);
  • Conduct outreach to BIPOC climate justice (youth) activists in Europe, plan events, and manage practical and logistical aspects of our climate justice work;
  • Coordinate the climate justice podcast series planning, handling scheduling for speakers, coordinating with partners, etc.;
  • Work with our Founder and Operations colleagues to plan the BIPOC climate justice summit, scheduled for March 2024. This includes designing the agenda, creating a timeline for communicating with participants, managing logistics, etc.;
  • Coordinate with Systemic Justice Communications to make sure progress is shared externally.

What we hope you’ll bring

  • Experience with climate justice work and racial, social, economic justice or human rights fields;
  • Experience navigating multiple tasks effectively and working in a rapidly growing organisation;
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and use creative problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles and achieve goals;
  • Experience managing events and projects with multiple external stakeholders;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in different cultural contexts;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • Willingness and ability to represent Systemic Justice as the first point of contact for the project, including speaking to the work and sharing updates.

Deadline and how to apply

The deadline for applications is Sunday 19 March 2023 at 23:59 CET.

We are organising an information call, where anyone interested in applying can join and learn more about our organisation, the role, and the process. The call will take place on 13 March at 18.00 CET (click here to register).

We expect to do the first interview online and a second interview in person. We expect to be able to offer the position to the selected candidate by end of April for a start date as soon as possible.

Your application should consist of your CV, and – instead of a traditional cover letter – a written response to these three questions:

  1. Why are you interested in Systemic Justice’s climate justice work?
  2. Can you describe a time when you have been involved in the implementation of a relevant project: what was your role in the implementation of this project and how did you go about it?
  3. Can you describe your process for handling competing deadlines and managing work pressure, particularly when working on multiple strands of work at the same time?

Our work is rooted in our foundational values of anti-oppression, intersectionality, and justice. We invite anyone who does not have lived experience with systems of oppression to reflect on their suitability for this role before applying, and to address this in the application if they choose to apply.

Conditions

Period: 12 months.

Remuneration: The hourly fee ranges 27-37 EUR based on experience.

Work week: Systemic Justice operates with a four-day, 32-hour work week.

Flexible schedules: We are generally online and available from 11-16 CET, but are otherwise flexible about working hours to accommodate the best individual balancing of personal and remote-work life.
