Job Summary

Impact tools at Textile Exchange are comprised of the Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix (PFM Matrix) and the Global Fiber Impact Explorer (GFIE).  Leveraging data, technology, research and UX, our impact tools are designed to support the uptake of preferred fibers and materials and enable brands to improve their raw material supply chains.

The Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix (PFM Matrix) is Textile Exchange’s tool for holistic assessment of preferred materials in the textile industry. The PFM Matrix integrates qualitative and quantitative data related to provide the user with an understanding of the impacts and risk areas of raw materials and fibers used within the apparel and footwear industry. The tool is intended to enable informed decisions related to materials and to guide the direction of travel for improvements in material production impacts in line with Textile Exchange’s Climate+ goals.

Textile Exchange recently acquired the Global Fiber Impact Explorer tool (GFIE), gifted by tool creators Google and WWF. The GFIE assesses fiber portfolio risks and hotspots by region and by fiber type across key categories: air pollution; forestry; biodiversity; climate; and water. The GFIE tool utilizes a combination of data sources, including from the UN, the WHO, the Google Earth Engine Data Catalog, and others. Through the tool, users are able to see the most significant risk hotspots in their supply chain by impact area and across the materials and regions they source.

This role will focus on development of the GFIE tool, reporting into the Climate+ Impact Tools Senior Manager and working closely with them to establish and execute a methodology review strategy and implementation of technical updates. The ideal person for this role will be able to take guidance from the Impact Tools Senior Manager and work independently to execute objectives.

Project Objectives – GFIE Senior Analyst

  • Establish deep familiarity with the existing algorithm structure.

  • Map and document the relationships between datasets and the assumptions that underpin the tool.

  • Create documentation for all key concepts that underpin the methodology and underlying assumptions.

  • Build on existing mapping of structural differences across impact areas in the tool, and develop proposals for alignment.

  • Develop and prototype required algorithm changes.

  • Provide input and support in the development of an expert review process for the methodology.

  • Work with technical partner to integrate algorithm and logic changes into software.

  • Work with the Impact Tools Senior Manager and the technical partner to identify and implement improved data management strategies.

  • Check algorithms and logic chains produced by technology development partner to ensure proper functionality.

  • Work on dataset reviews alongside third parties.

  • Create high quality materials to be shared with internal and external stakeholders, to communicate complex information in a simple, easy to understand way.

  • Other duties related to methodology and algorithm development as needed.

  • Provide support as needed for the development of the Preferred Fiber & Materials Matrix methodology development and its integration into the GFIE tool.

  • Work cross-functionally with other Textile Exchange teams, including Communications, Data and Technology, and Fiber and Materials.

  • Potential to provide support for other tool development functions as relevant to unique skillsets, such as copywriting, user experience, stakeholder engagement, data analytics, etc.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Textiles, Sustainable Business, Data Science, Engineering, or Environmental Studies.

  • Aptitude for systems thinking and creative problem solving.

  • A well-rounded understanding of environmental issues in supply chains spanning climate, water, toxicity, waste, land use, and social required.  Experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modelling preferred.

  • Interest in the fashion and textile industry required and experience preferred. Demonstrated interest in Textile Exchange’s vision, mission, and goals preferred.

  • Organized and self-directed; ability to work remotely effectively.

  • Detail-oriented, logical, and systematic.

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively.

  • Fluency in Microsoft suite, particularly Excel, required. Advanced modelling and analytics skills and ability to handle large data sets preferred.

  • Ability to work in a flexible, yet fast-paced remote environment, able to meet deadlines and share progress regularly.

  • Ability to source and distil academic research from high quality peer-reviewed evidence. Experience with assessing data quality and research methodologies in academic research.

  • Strong knowledge of raw material production processes and growing practices.

  • Fiber-specific knowledge and/or general raw material background in other sectors spanning agriculture and manufacturing preferred.

  • Coding experience and/or basic understanding of Drools, DMN, and the ability to work in VS Code preferred but not required.

Employment Package

  • Contract full-time position, starting 1st February 2023
  • Work from home, virtual/remote (flexible working hours is a must due to difference in international time zones).
  • Compensation range: $55,000-$60,000
  • Textile Exchange is currently unable to provide sponsorship for work permits. Candidates need to have the existing right to work in a nominated working location.
