About Finance:
The Finance Department supports Accion’s cutting edge work in economic development, impact investing, and global financial inclusion by providing key information to the Board of Directors, Board Committees, Department and Program Managers and staff. The professionals on the Finance team have significant work experience managing Accion’s financial activities and providing quality support, reports, and information throughout the company.
Position Summary
The Budget Specialist works closely with the department heads, project managers and management to develop annual, multi-year company and project budgets as well as maintaining key budget systems and tools for Accion’s budget process. The Budget Specialist prepares the financial reporting for key grants and contracts and regular reporting to budget owners and departments across the organization. S/he works closely with Operations Department Heads, Project Managers, Resource Development, Human Resources, Controller, Finance staff and CFO to ensure overall operations are within budget, to provide reporting and to develop appropriate tools. Closely coordinates activities with 2-3 members of finance team.
Responsibilities
Budget & Analysis –
- Provides guidance and support for the development of departmental and project annual budgets including revenues, carry-forward analysis, and expenses. Works closely to provide feedback and analysis to budget owners and Accion management.
- Schedules monthly budget reporting meetings with budget owners, preparing relevant reports, leading discussions providing analysis and proposing revisions on budgets to date.
- Reviews, analyzes, and reports budgets performance making recommendations to maximize the use of funds and implement changes and revisions for budgets.
- Key contributor to the annual budget process including the preparation of the budget guidelines and timeline.
- Coordinates billing and invoicing with accounting and project managers at Accion.
Grants & Contracts –
- Oversees the financial administration, documentation managers and donors to provide accurate and appropriate reports to donors and other funders.
- Manages preparation and review of new proposal budgets for major grants and contracts by working closely with project managers, department heads and resource development. Ensures appropriate assumptions used and provided guidance and feedback on project budgets to be submitted.
- Manages the planning process and financial reporting for multi-year grants including renewals or extensions for major grants and recommends potential adjustments or extensions.
- Prepares and completes revenue recognition for major grants and areas of Accion for accounting and budget vs. actual reporting.
- Oversees project review meetings with project and department managers.
Systems Management –
- Oversee the management of Adaptive budget software and the project administration in Deltek.
- Working with IT develop system interfaces and information uploads to Deltek and excel formats. Manage system upgrades and updates and coordinate with finance and departments for integration of budget systems information.
- Develop Adaptive reports and other budget tools in coordination with management, project and department leads to provide timely and appropriate information.
- Other special projects and activities as requested by Senior Management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree with emphasis on Finance, Public Finance, Public Administration, or related field; or equivalent years of experience (4+ or Associates and 2+ years of experience); Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2+ years profession al experience in Finance with focus in budgeting, project management and grant and accounting reporting.
- Experience working with nonprofit budgeting and accounting.
- Advance level in Excel and other MS Office applications.
- Knowledge of Adaptive budget system is desired.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage and coordinate with budget staff as well project leads and department managers
- Sound problem solving ability.
- Achieves goals with minimal ongoing supervision.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in making planning decisions and maintaining confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with all levels of the organization. Spanish language skills a plus.
- Ability to effectively manage the workload working independently including planning, organizing and prioritizing.
