Dillon’s Environmental Sciences technical group is looking for a Botanist to join our existing talent base in Atlantic Canada. The position is for one of our four Maritime (Fredericton, Halifax, Saint John or Sydney) offices. You will have the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects while providing clients with a fully integrated and superior customer experience.

This position is largely focused on clients and projects in the Maritime Provinces, but will also include the potential to work on projects across Canada. As a botanist at Dillon, you will be responsible for developing and fostering healthy client relationships, managing and supporting projects, scoping and executing field programs, technical report writing, and working with a dynamic team of environmental scientists, engineers and technologists.

Responsibilities

What your day will look like

Technical Development & Project Management (97%)

  • Participate in the scoping, development, and execution of independent and supporting biophysical, wetland and/or vegetative habitat studies and programs
  • Support clients in obtaining permitting and approvals of infrastructure project planning, design and construction
  • Lead and conduct wetland and vegetation assessments, including  inventories, rare plant surveys, weed surveys and wetland evaluations, field assessments, functional assessments, classification and field and map-based delineations;
  • Complete field data analysis and interpretation, report writing and client/project coordination;
  • Support preparation of proposals including scopes of work and budget estimates for review by senior professionals;
  • Prepare technical reports in support of impact assessment studies and regulatory permit applications; and
  • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and technical experts in biology and environmental science.

Learning & Development (3%)

  • Commit to self-development and ongoing learning and professional development
  • Input to the career development of junior staff, including technical direction, training recommendations, coaching and mentoring
  • Contribute to Dillon’s corporate profile through active participation in professional associations and committees

Qualifications

What you will need to succeed

  • Commitment to health and safety
  • Commitment to project quality and capability of meeting project deadlines
  • Valid driver’s license (Class 5)

Experience

  • Proven vegetation identification skills including wetland indicators, rare plants, and weeds/exotic/horticultural species
  • Proficiency in air photo/satellite imagery interpretation, classification and delineation of wetlands
  • Experience in preparing federal and provincial regulatory applications is an asset
  • Well organized, attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate and up to date field information
  • Ability to coordinate project planning, logistics and preparation for field work
  • Excellent oral and written communication, critical thinking, organizational and interpersonal skills
