Associate Director
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:
Sacred Heart Community Service (SHCS) located in San José, CA is looking for a proven leader to facilitate the implementation of Sacred Heart’s strategic plan through the transformation of direct service programs into pathways for low-income residents and their allies to get involved, build community, and exercise power. The Associate Director supports the core program divisions of the organization through program evaluation and resource development, and ensures programs engage members to challenge and change economic, political, and cultural systems such as have served to empower some while oppressing many. The position will lead efforts to center the voice of members in organizational decision-making, including providing support for the Leadership Council. The person in this position must be highly organized and possess superior oral and written communication skills, a proven track record in program management and professional development, and the ability to work flexibly and creatively. The ideal candidate must be equally committed to our vision of a community united to ensure every child and adult is free from poverty, an approach of driving policy change through transformational leadership development, and teaching and living an anti-racism and anti-oppression worldview. Position Summary:
The Associate Director provides leadership to SHCS’ program divisions and spearheads efforts align them with the vision, mission, and strategic plan of the organization. This position is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and tracking of SHCS’ Operations Plan. The Associate Director provides direct supervision, coaching, and training to the leadership and staff of the essential services, energy, family assistance, homelessness prevention, and self-sufficiency divisions with a focus on program impact, member engagement/voice, and leadership development. The Associate Director partners with the Community Development team to help secure and steward resources for program growth and sustainability, overseeing data reporting and accountability. The position works with the Deputy Director and program directors to develop budgets and to support grant/contract administration. The position supports the Executive Director in developing and strengthening partnerships with community-based organizations, philanthropic and public sector investors.
Description of Duties:
Program Leadership (55-60%)
● Leads the creation, oversight, and implementation of SHCS annual Operations Plan
including research and development, setting and measuring impact goals, creating and
monitoring timelines and work plans, working with staff, Board of Directors, and members.
● Oversees program evaluation processes for reporting, analysis, and assessment of program
impact data including staff training, learning, accountability, and performance improvement.
● Spearheads the strategic alignment of programs to build a strong base of active leaders
through member engagement and leadership development by providing coaching, training,
and accountability for program leadership and staff.
● Directs efforts to cultivate member voice in organizational decision-making through
development of program advisory committees, mutual support committees, and action
committees. Provides supports for Leadership Council.
● Oversees member satisfaction and feedback processes.
● Leads program experimentation and development. This includes both identifying promising
approaches and best practices and supporting the development and evaluation of new
strategies and programs.
● Oversees the recruitment and hiring of program management.
● Provides structure, supervision, support, training, evaluation, and professional development
of the management of SHCS’ Program Divisions: Essential Services, Energy, Family
Assistance, Homelessness Prevention and Self-Sufficiency.
Fund Development (10-15%)
● Provides support for the development of proposals to government, foundation, and corporate
funding sources, working closely with the development team, program leadership,
collaborative partners, and finance staff.
● Supports the development and presentation of data, performance narratives, and reports to
funders and institutional stakeholders on our efforts and impact.
● Participates in the cultivation and solicitation of top-level gifts and institutional solicitations.
● Partners with Deputy Director, Management Analyst, and program directors to support the
development of program budgets and coordinates dissemination and analysis of financials
with program leadership and staff.
● Coordinates with grant administration, contract compliance, reporting, stewardship, and
policies and procedures.
● Supports the development of the Community Needs Assessment and Community Action
Plan.
Strategic Partnerships (10-15%)
● Supports the development, tracking, and implementation of strategic partnership plan, with a
focus on core movement building allies and program partners capable of building collective
power and solidarity.
● Identifies, develops, and nurtures relationships with partner organizations, community allies,
and policy makers.
● Develops, supports, and facilitates coalitions and regional anti-poverty program
collaborations with key community partners as needed.
Leadership (10-15%)
● Supports the planning and implementation of SHCS programs, events, training, policy
campaigns, and outreach efforts.
● Serves as a member of the Senior Management Team and serves as on site manager as
needed.
● Attends Board of Directors meetings and Board committee meetings as assigned.
● Supports Board Program & Strategy Committee.
● Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
● Strong commitment to our vision of uniting community to ensure every child and adult is free
from poverty;
● 3-4 years of executive/senior management experience in human services, public health,
education, community development, or equivalent experience.
● 5-7 years of direct program management experience.
● Demonstrated experience in performance management, strategic and operations planning,
including training, tracking, and reporting systems;
● Proven results in fund development for programs;
● Superior verbal, written, and presentation skills;
● Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to multitask, and provide quick
responses;
● Four-year degree or equivalent experience;
● Bilingual in Spanish/English;
● Available to work some evenings and weekends as required;
● Proficiency with CRM databases (such as Salesforce), Word, Excel, and Powerpoint;
● Ability to lift up to 30lbs without assistance and up to 50lbs with assistance;
● The position also requires computer use up to 6-8 hours per day;
● Must be insurable under the Organization’s driving insurance requirements;
● Must successfully pass a DMV and background check.
● Proof of fully updated COVID-19 vaccination.
Preferred:
● Direct experience working with low-income populations through service, community
organizing, or policy advocacy efforts.
● Basic graphic design software proficiency.
Position is exempt, full-time and reports to the Executive Director
Compensation:
The salary is commensurate with experience. Salary range is $155,000-$166,000 per year.
