Position Overview
Rare’s Fish Forever program is an innovative global movement to transform near-shore fisheries. Fish Forever has ambitious objectives to combat chronic overfishing: recovering fish stocks; increasing the economic value of local fisheries; ensuring food security to vulnerable communities; protecting the most biologically diverse marine habitats; contributing to climate change resilience; and building local leadership capacity to ensure sustainability.
The Fish Forever Applied Science Team works to support country teams and partners implementing Fish Forever’s Managed Access and Reserve model. We work closely with in-country implementing teams, providing technical support in the areas of Reserve design, data collection, data analysis and interpretation, learning resources and capacity building, technology innovation, and information sharing.
The Associate, Applied Science (Geospatial Analyst) plays a critical role in supporting evidence-based implementation through interdisciplinary geospatial analysis of ecological, fisheries, and socio-economic data, as well as designing learning resources and contributing to the data collection and analysis process. The Associate will work with the Applied Science, Data, and MEL teams to coordinate data management, analysis, and interpretation; with in-country implementing teams to ensure data quality and develop adaptive implementation solutions; and with other members of the FF Hub to build capacity and develop learning resources for applied science.
Responsibilities
The Associate, Applied Science (Geospatial Analyst) will work independently primarily in the following areas:
Spatial Data Analysis and Management
- Evaluate patterns and trends through spatial analysis of ecological and socioeconomic data;
- Develop high-quality maps, charts, graphs, tables, and other figures that illustrate and summarize ecological and socioeconomic geospatial data;
- Perform GIS/remote sensing data collection, management, processing, and analysis using various software packages
- Contribute to spatial analysis involved in Climate Change Vulnerability Assessments, including geospatial components of public-facing data presentation;
- Contribute to geospatial analysis of emerging initiatives and needs such as Blue Carbon projects;
- Design and lead efforts to enhance Fish Forever’s socioeconomic geospatial analysis capacity, including application for implementation strategies.
- Serve as the primary technical support to Fish Forever country teams for the design MA+R strategy maps integrating larval dispersal patterns, habitat suitability, biodiversity, and socio-cultural factors;
- Support the development of interactive marine reserve planning tools, including preparation of data into geo-packages; developing training materials for tool users; and serving as point of contact for relevant contracted developers and country-level implementing teams;
- Manage and update digital library of geospatial data, including critical habitat data, household survey maps, and community mapping products;
- Digitize or convert physical maps, as needed;
- Update boundary shapefiles to be inputted in the Fish Forever Data Portal via MapBox software;
- Ensure data quality at all stages;
Implementation Support
- Work with country implementing teams to develop, coordinate, and conduct trainings and learning resources to increase implementing team and partner capacity in geospatial analysis and applied fisheries science;
- Create and update content for community-based practitioners and local leaders, and support the creation and updating of multi-media resources for the same purpose;
- Work with country-level implementing teams to coordinate Applied Science projects, advance context-specific interpretations of data, and develop follow-up research to guide implementation strategies;
- Coordinate with BE.Center colleagues to support the design, analysis, interpretation, and application of behavior adoption social science research, as needed;
- Support country- and site-level, mixed-methods Profiling and Baselining activities, including through development and maintenance of qualitative data processing systems;
- Support Applied Science Team communications internal to Rare, including drafting and layout of English-language team newsletters and other knowledge-sharing platforms, as well as coordination of regular meetings with implementing teams and partners.
Qualifications
- Two or more years coordinating complex projects with the proven ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects simultaneously;
- Proficiency using ArcGIS, QGIS and methods for manipulating, processing, analyzing and visualizing spatial data;
- Familiarity with the principles of marine ecology and/or fisheries science and principles and methods of social science (sociology, anthropology, gender studies, or microeconomics)
- Fundamental understanding of remote sensing science and the characteristics of geospatial data;
- Proven ability to synthesize geospatial data based on team inputs and to create visualizations efficiently;
- Proficiency with Marxan and database programming languages such as SQL, R and Python for automating GIS analysis;
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills with proven ability to develop and maintain working relationships across geographical distances and cultures;
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in another Fish Forever language (Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia) preferred;
- Strong writing skills in English and prior experience in proofreading and editing technical reports and preparing presentations;
- Proven ability to communicate technical information in English to a non-technical audience, both verbally and in writing;
- A degree in fisheries science, environmental science, geography, geospatial analysis, or natural resource management; OR other certification in geospatial analysis; OR the equivalent professional experience is required;
- Ability to travel internationally;
- Experience conducting underwater habitat and fish surveys a plus;
- Experience living/working with small-scale fishing communities preferred.
