Assistant Project Manager - Natural Resources

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants has an immediate need for an Endangered Species Specialist/Assistant Project Manager to report to our Houston office. This position will assist with project management and will conduct surveys for wildlife including bats.  Surveys may include acoustic studies, mist-netting and Radio Telemetry studies, and mortality monitoring for a variety of projects in the central and eastern U.S.  Extensive travel and nighttime work may be required.  Lodging and travel expenses will be covered during extended out-of-town field work.

What you will accomplish

• Manage projects and milestones within schedule and budget expectations
• Manage the financial performance of individual projects and effectively coordinate with clients and agencies
• Manage client relationships and conduct business development with new and existing clients
• Supervise, mentor and instruct technical staff and field personnel
• Prepare protocols and supervise surveys for sensitive habitats and species, including general surveys and report writing, focused or protocol-level surveys, and pre-construction surveys
• Prepare reports related to Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, technical documents, proposals, and other written deliverables related to various permitting and compliance projects
• Prepare permit applications and work with agencies during the permitting process
• QA/QC oversight of field data and reports
• Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner
• Assist other SWCA offices with their business development goals and objectives, and help ensure the financial success of the natural resources program as a whole
• Maintain a collaborative work environment and positive morale between SWCA staff, subcontractors, and clients
• Conduct surveys and collection of field data concerning bats and other species
• Record data on field site forms or other forms
• Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms
• Photograph appropriate habitat, species, and landforms
• Conduct habitat assessments and site characterization studies

Experience and qualifications for success

• Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field Project or client management experience is preferred
• Previous experience with bat survey techniques required
• Must have demonstrated field experience with bat species of the eastern and central U.S.
• Previous experience with Indiana bats required; experience with other endangered species is a plus
• Candidates who currently hold, or have recently held, a Federal Fish and Wildlife Section 10(a)(1)(A) permit for listed bat species (e.g., Indiana bat, gray bat, big-eared bats, etc.) highly preferred
• Must have current rabies vaccination, or be willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations
• Must have superb observation skills and the ability to record accurate field notes
• Must have ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather conditions; ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain; and ability to work at night.
• Persons in this position may have to carry equipment and/or supplies, weighing up to 40 pounds.

An employee in this Houston_, TX-based_ position can expect an hourly pay rate of $28.99 - $36.75/hour_. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
