SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding our team and actively looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work. We are looking for a self-motivated Assistant Project Environmental Planner with attention to detail and strong communication skills. This position is a career growth opportunity to join SWCA’s expanding fire and forestry science practice supporting a wide variety of fire science projects in the western US.
Individuals need to be willing and able to work with peers across various offices and accomplish tasks associated with a variety of projects in any given week. The ability to work directly with clients is imperative. The interest in pursuing new business is also desirable. This is a permanent full-time, regular position, reporting to one of SWCA’s Project Managers.

You will be responsible for managing wildfire planning and forestry projects, supervising a team, interfacing with clients and agency representatives, and performing technical document authoring and review. Specific responsibilities include:
Provide technical and business development support to better serve SWCA clients and assist in growing our Wildfire and Forestry Services.
Lead and support fire planning and forest restoration efforts.
Work closely with state and federal agency interdisciplinary teams to compile, synthesize, and develop fire plans and reports.
Work collaboratively with a team to meet the needs of assigned projects.
Conduct background research and data collection.
Conduct site visits, including preparing surveys and site assessments for projects located in the wildland urban interface and forested landscapes.
Prepare technical documents and other high-quality deliverables for clients.
Provide excellent organizational, oral, written, and analytical skills to support projects and the team.
Applicant must be able to work in a team environment, with strong multi-tasking skills and able to work on more than one project at a time, meeting tight deadlines.
Demonstrate the ability to perform under pressure with schedule constraints.
Demonstrate excellent leadership behavior and professionalism while providing leadership at the project, team, and office level.
Provide enterprise-level support by contributing to business development pursuits and proposals.
We seek a team member who brings with her/him/they the demonstrated experience in fire planning project management, technical report authorship, and agency consultation. We seek the following specific qualities:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in fire ecology, fire management, forestry, or a related field.
Three (3) plus years of experience with wildfire science, or comparable experience.
One (1) to three (3) years of experience working in the environmental consulting industry or serving in a project mangement role.
Experience working with and/or interpreting fire behavior modeling tools and forest stand simulations. Experience working in forestry, silviculture, forest ecology or fire ecology, with agencies at the local, state or federal levels.
Experience developing forest management plans, hazardous fuels projects and prescribed burn plans.
Experience working with communities and agencies developing wildfire mitigation projects.
Experience authoring fire, forestry and fuels related NEPA/CEQA documents or sections of EA or EIS.
Experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.
Working knowledge of GIS programs.
Master’s Degree in environmental science, forestry, fire science, or related field.
Experience developing spatial fire management plans and other online spatial planning documents.
Experience with quantitative wildfire risk assessment modeling.
Experience with hazard mitigation planning.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; attention to detail; and organization, schedule, and budget management skills.

In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act (EPEWA), we are disclosing a good faith estimate of the compensation range for roles that will be, or could be, performed in Colorado.
In Colorado, an employee in this position can expect an hourly rate between $23.00 and $32.00, depending on experience, geographic locations, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Employees in this position are eligible for consideration for SWCA’s annual bonus program, which provides awards based on individual and organizational performance.
