The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and
support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on
the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester
and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community
Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic
and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the
Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research, and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for,
and redesigning how education is delivered.
Our School
Deep Creek Middle School is an independent day school in the settlement of Deep Creek, on the
island of Eleuthera, in The Bahamas. It was founded by The Island School in September 2001 with the
goal of increasing access to educational resources for people in South Eleuthera and preparing the
future leaders of The Bahamas. The school has grown to serve students in grades 7, 8 and 9. DCMS
offers an experiential approach to the Bahamian national curriculum.
Within the framework of The Island School’s vision of leadership effecting change, DCMS creates a
learning environment where students not only learn the subject matter from the Bahamian national
curriculum, but focus on academic growth, leadership and responsible citizenship. In order to
achieve these core values, our programs and curriculum teach critical thinking, problem solving,
communication and social skills.
General Responsibilities
The Middle School Assistant Principal shares in the responsibilities of running a remote campus,
working closely with the principal of DCMS as well as other program leaders and community members.
This role includes both administrative (⅔) and teaching responsibilities (⅓). With oversight from
the Principal, the Assistant Principal will take responsibility for student support, discipline,
and coordination of daily schedules and activities. DCMS prides itself as a model of place-based and
experiential learning in partnership with other programs atThe Island School. As part of managing the
daily schedule, the Assistant Principal will take a lead role in coordinating and envisioning the partnership
opportunities including School Without Walls, community engagement, and project-based learning opportunities.
The primary responsibilities of the Middle School Assistant Principal will include, but not be
limited to:
In all decisions, ensure alignment with The Island School vision, mission, and core values
Support leadership on all facets of middle school life, especially curriculum, teaching/learning
and student support
Support the school’s strategic initiatives and day-to-day operations
Assist with administrative tasks such as creating yearly/weekly schedules, managing programming
logistics and creating handbooks and other informational materials
Provide leadership and record-keeping for attendance, student support and discipline
coordinate daily after school programming, including tutoring, sports and the arts
Work with colleagues across the organization to coordinate the curriculum and logistics for
School Without Walls and Community Engagement programs
Coordinate local and international student travel, including the Grade 8 trip and summer camps
Communicate and engage regularly with staff and families to maintain trust and rapport and build
a strong home-school partnership
Embrace diversity and consistently demonstrate intercultural understanding and empathy
Maintain a healthy and respectful school culture that ensures a safe, positive climate for
teaching and learning
Teach one or more classes per semester
Serve as the advisor for 6-8 students
