We are currently looking for an Analyst Consult/Environmental Scientist to join our Water team.

Key responsibilities

Much of our work in the Water and Environment sector requires the skills of an environmental scientist to help us understand the impact of flows on ecology, water quality and sediment dynamics for water resource planning and supporting new development. While much of our work is around assessing the effect of normal and low flows, particularly for drought planning, we also undertake a diverse and interesting array of projects, ranging from habitat restoration work through to infrastructure work at airports. In these projects the contribution of an environmental scientist is paramount.

  • You will input into a range of environmental assessments where understanding that hydrology has an impact on habitats and flood/drought management.
  • You will need to be able to work effectively with water companies, developers, design engineers, contractors, planner and other regulators to help achieve positive outcomes of our projects. You will provide technical input into a wide range of projects.
  • You will ideally have a strong background in hydrology who is qualified, numerate and willing to learn and apply their knowledge and skills to our diverse projects and their associated hydrological conditions.
  • Our preferred candidate could also ideally demonstrate the ability interpret and run hydraulic models and experience in Environmental Impact Assessment would also be an advantage.
  • While much of your work will be office based there is highly likely to be a related fieldwork component where you can apply your skills and expertise.
  • The successful candidate will be part of our water team but will need to work closely with our environmental impact assessment and ecology colleagues.
  • There is also the opportunity to work with other parts of our business with the aim of helping to develop a portfolio of projects where hydrological expertise is an important element.

Key competencies and experience

  • Bachelors (2.1 or above) and ideally a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject, with a strong background in hydrology and its impact of the natural world.
  • Numerate and keen to analyse, interpret and explain hydrological data to support environmental impact understanding.
  • Ability to work independently and be curious about data and the implications from analysis.
  • Understanding and knowledge of associated drought and flood policies and data sources especially EU and UK.
  • Demonstrable ability to write effectively.
  • A full UK driver’s license.

Skills and behaviours

  • Enthusiastic, keen to learn and able to act quickly and be flexible across projects.
  • Strong communication skills and a close attention to detail.
  • Excellent team working.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Ambitious, enthusiastic and self-motivated to thrive in this busy and demanding environment.
  • Self-organized.
  • Competent with commonly used office software, e.g., Microsoft Office.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the UK water industry and planning.
  • Experience of data manipulation and interpretation using appropriate software or language.
  • Experience of using relevant numerical models (e.g., hydrological or habitat models).
  • GIS capabilities.
  • Some industrial or consultancy experience would be useful.
